Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines have issued tsunami warnings after a powerful earthquake struck Taiwan on Tuesday.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) announced that a tsunami warning has been issued for Japan’s coastal areas.
A magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurred in Taiwan at 8:58 a.m. on April 3, 2024. Its depth was approximately 35 kilometers, or 21 miles. Associated Press reported.
The Japan Meteorological Agency announced that slight sea level changes were detected south of Japan.
Residents around Okinawa’s main island, Miyako Island and Yaeyama Island were urged to evacuate immediately, as waves could reach heights of 9.8 feet.
“A tsunami is approaching the coast. Please evacuate as soon as possible. Waves may hit repeatedly. Please continue to evacuate until all warnings are lifted,” JAM said. first reported By Al Jazeera.
The Philippine earthquake agency said high tsunami waves were expected in coastal areas, the newspaper reported.
