Japan might participate with the US in a $175 billion defense initiative called Golden Dome.

Following two discussions between President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Ishauba, reports indicate that Japan is contemplating collaboration on the proposed “Golden Dome” project in the coming years. This initiative surfaces amidst the global tariffs that President Trump has enacted, alongside the ongoing tariffs implemented mutually by both nations. A recent White House press conference highlighted a dedication to cultivate a “golden age” for the United States.

The White House Briefing cited that discussions between Japan and the US have been ongoing since February. A reaffirmation of their commitment to “bilateral security and defense” was reported. Last month, Trump and Ishauba exchanged thoughts on tariffs, “economic security cooperation,” and “diplomatic and security challenges,” according to findings from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Some analysts, including those from Nikkei, suggest Japan might leverage its participation in this project as a potential “negotiation tool” in economic discussions. Prime Minister Ishauba has maintained a stance advocating for “investment over tariffs.”

The “Golden Dome,” modeled after Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system, is projected to cost around $175 billion, with long-term projections reaching as high as $831 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office. Trump has appointed Space General Michael Gutrain to oversee the project, aiming for its completion by the end of his term in 2029. The system is intended to form a network of satellites, sensors, and interceptors aimed at preventing air attacks on the US mainland, with proponents asserting that it’s primarily a deterrent.

However, critics are raising concerns that this project may align the US and Japan with what has been referred to as a “new arms race” in the defense and space sectors. Countries like China, Russia, and North Korea may perceive the Golden Dome System as a threat, complicating Japan’s regional standing and relationships.
