The young female influencer was stabbed to death while live streaming on Tokyo Street by a man police identified as a follower with grem.
New York Times Report In the incident that sent a shockwave through the Japanese online community, a 22-year-old female influencer was brutally stabbed and killed while he was live streaming on the streets of Tokyo. The attack that took place on Tuesday in a neighborhood popular with university students was allegedly carried out by 42-year-old Kenji Takano, who was charged with murder by Tokyo police.
According to eyewitnesses, Sato cried out for help before her livestream suddenly ended, and heard the sound of an emergency siren could be heard by the audience she was involved in. Police reports say Takano used a survival knife to stab Sato in his head, neck and torso while filming himself on a busy street. Despite efforts to revive her, Sato succumbed to her injuries after being rushed to the hospital.
Investigators believe the attack is not random as it appears to have been Sato's followers who had grumbled her allegedly failed to pay off the large amount Takano lent her. Sato had not previously disclosed the location of the streaming, but Takano was able to track her down by identifying the building that appears in the background of her live stream.
The aftermath of the attack was also filmed online, with bystanders lying down after posting a photo of Sato and bleeding on the street. With over 2,600 followers on the LiveStraming app Whoatch, Sato often filmed films, where he visited the bar and met other streamers.
This tragic incident is not the first of its kind in Japan. In 2023, the 26-year-old man was sentenced to 17 years in prison for the stinging death of a 33-year-old female influencer who recently ended his relationship.
Violent crime remains relatively rare in Tokyo, but increasing inequality, stagnant wages and rising prices have led to growing concerns about fraying of Japan's social cohesion.
