Jared McCain Joins the Oklahoma City Thunder
Jared McCain, a guard previously on the Philadelphia 76ers, is set to join the reigning NBA champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder. In exchange for McCain, the Thunder are reportedly sending a 2026 first-round pick along with three second-round picks to the Houston Rockets.
At just about to turn 22, McCain was a first-round draft pick by the 76ers in 2024 after an impressive season at Duke University. His early career, however, faced setbacks due to injuries. In December 2024, he suffered a torn meniscus in his left knee, which sidelined him for the remainder of the season. Unfortunately, the situation worsened this season when he underwent surgery for a torn UCL in his right thumb, limiting his court time further.
During his rookie year, McCain averaged 15.3 points per game, but this season his numbers have dropped to about 6.6 points over 37 games, likely due to his ongoing recovery. Recently, though, he has begun to improve his performance, earning more playing time in Philadelphia.
Now, he joins a talented Thunder roster that features strong guard players, including last season’s MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. It looks like McCain might start off the bench since the team also utilizes Kason Wallace and Ajay Mitchell in similar roles.
The Thunder have been impressive this season, regaining their stride after a strong finish last year. They currently hold the best record in the NBA, boasting an impressive tally of 40 wins and 11 losses.
As Oklahoma City looks ahead, they recently clinched their first Larry O’Brien Trophy, marking a significant achievement in the franchise’s history. Fans are likely hopeful that McCain’s addition will bolster an already robust lineup as they aim for further success this season.
