Outgoing Texas Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat, honored rapper Chris Brown, who has a felony assault conviction related to his ex-girlfriend Rihanna, during a concert on Saturday.
Crockett attended the performance featuring Brown and Usher in Arlington, Texas, where she presented them with a tribute from the Congressional Record. Her choice to specifically acknowledge Brown raised eyebrows due to his history of violent offenses.
“We’re currently experiencing an incredible sense of black joy,” Crockett remarked at the event. “I felt it was important to record that in the Congressional record.”
Brown’s most notable conviction came in 2009 when he pled guilty to felony assault after physically assaulting Rihanna. He received a sentence of probation and community service, along with domestic violence counseling, yet he did not serve any jail time for the incident.

Over the years, Brown has faced multiple legal issues concerning violent crimes. For instance, in 2013, he was arrested for allegedly punching someone outside a hotel in Washington, D.C. While that charge was downgraded to a misdemeanor, he pled guilty in 2014.
Then, in 2016, he faced charges related to an incident where a model claimed he pointed a gun at her, leading to a brief arrest. Although released on bail, no conviction followed.
More recently, in 2025, Brown was arrested stemming from a 2023 incident involving music producer Abraham Diaw, facing serious charges such as grievous bodily harm and weapon possession.
In July 2026, he entered a guilty plea to a lesser charge of affray and is awaiting sentencing in October.
