Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat from Texas, spoke during her opening address at Tougaloo University in Jackson, Mississippi, on Sunday. She emphasized the importance of resilience, saying, “There are people who tell us there are no tables that don’t have seats for you, but I’m here to remind you of Montgomery and those folding chairs.” She urged the audience to recognize their ability to lift themselves up in the face of adversity.
Her comments echoed a viral incident from August 2023, involving a confrontation on the Montgomery riverfront where a black captain was attacked by white sailors. The folding chair became a symbol of resistance after the captain used it to defend himself, illustrating a powerful statement about standing up against injustice.
Texas Democrats rallied on Sunday, encouraging Black college graduates to advocate for themselves and support each other, referring to the solidarity shown by bystanders in the Montgomery incident. However, some conservatives quickly criticized Crockett’s remarks, with Senator Mike Lee from Utah calling her comments “not cool.”
These remarks come amid Crockett’s ongoing tensions with former President Donald Trump. Crockett recently retorted to Trump’s comments labeling her as “low IQ.” She expressed that every time he mentions her, it reflects his fear of a strong, intelligent black woman challenging him.
In her role as deputy ranking member of the House Committee on Surveillance and Government Reform, Crockett is vying for a leadership position that would put her in charge of federal oversight, particularly regarding Trump’s agenda.
Crockett has faced backlash from conservatives who have accused her of inciting violence. Earlier comments, especially regarding R-Texas Senator Ted Cruz, have drawn particular attention. Some described her approach as aggressive, with references to “punching” back against Republicans.
Critics also labeled Crockett as an incendiary figure, claiming that her rhetoric contributes to political unrest. Earlier in the year, Attorney General Pam Bondy had called out her remarks as dangerous, adding to the discourse surrounding her controversial political style.
Crockett has yet to respond to requests for comments from various media outlets.
