Texas Democrat Reacts Emotionally to Senator’s Removal
On a podcast Wednesday, Texas Democrat Jasmine Crockett shared her emotional response after watching footage of California Senator Alex Padilla’s forced removal from a press conference led by Department of Homeland Security Secretary Christy Noem. She mentioned that she “literally” cried upon seeing the incident unfold.
During the press conference, Padilla confused Noem’s remarks, leading to security being called to escort him out of the room. She recalled catching the moment unexpectedly while at the office of another House member. Crockett expressed disbelief at the treatment of Padilla, noting that he is the first Latino senator from California. “It was just heartbreaking to witness a senior senator being treated with such disregard,” she said. “It’s hard to fathom, really.”
Crockett continued, “You would think senators would be treated with more respect, but this shows how alarming this administration really is.” She reflected on Padilla’s comments, suggesting that if this could happen to a senator, the treatment of everyday people could be even worse.
The incident occurred while Noem was discussing the Los Angeles riots, during which Padilla attempted to ask questions. Security quickly intervened, instructing him to raise his hand. Following his removal, Padilla was reportedly told to lie face down while being handcuffed.
MSNBC anchor Nicole Wallace also commented on the Padilla incident, calling it “one of the darkest days” of her career during a broadcast of “Pod Save America.” She expressed that it was a strikingly cold moment in political discourse.
In a response to the event, Tricia McLaughlin, deputy secretary for homeland security, criticized Padilla for his demeanor and failure to identify himself. In a post following the incident, she stated Padilla was “disrespectful” and had not complied with officers’ requests. “Officers acted appropriately, as they perceived him as a potential threat,” McLaughlin wrote.
