Grammy-winning songwriter Brett James tragically lost his life on Thursday in a plane crash.
The 57-year-old was flying with his partner, Melody Wilson, and their daughter, Meryl Maxwell Wilson, when their plane went down near Iotra Valley Elementary School in North Carolina, as reported by the Daily Mail. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that there were no survivors.
“A Cirrus SR22T crashed on a field in Franklin, North Carolina on Thursday, September 18th, around 3pm local time. Three people were on board,” the FAA noted.
The FAA also indicated that the National Transportation Safety Board will commence an investigation into the incident.
The Macon County Sheriff’s Office addressed the local community regarding the unfortunate event.
“Parents with children attending Iotla School, the students and staff are safe. There was an airplane accident on nearby property,” the sheriff’s office clarified. “Again, all students and staff are safe.”
James collaborated with many notable artists during his career. He wrote hits for Carrie Underwood, including “Jesus, Take the Wheel,” as well as songs for Jason Aldean, Rascal Flatts, and Kenny Chesney.
James had once mentioned on his Instagram that he had achieved “27th #1 song.”

“It’s painful to hear about the loss of my friend Brett James. He was someone I deeply respected and admired,” wrote Aldean. “I feel honored to have known and worked alongside him, and my thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time.”

So many of his songs made it onto that debut album.” Gracin continued, “We teamed up again for my second album, where he did half of the production and co-wrote several tracks. Evans shared her profound sadness, stating, “I am heartbroken by the loss of one of the best songwriters. I pray for his family. It’s a tragic day, and I already miss him.” She reflected on their collaborative spirit and the impact he had on her music.
