Jason Alexander Reveals George Costanza Casting Secrets
In a recent episode of his podcast, “Really? No, really?”, Jason Alexander, known for his role as George Costanza on the iconic sitcom “Seinfeld,” spoke with co-host Peter Tilden and Jennifer Kasin Armstrong, the author of *Seinfeldia*. This book reflects on the behind-the-scenes aspects of the beloved show.
During their chat, they touched on how Alexander landed the famous role and revealed that several prominent actors were also considered. “I know about Chris Rock, Danny DeVito, Paul Shaffer, and Rosie O’Donnell,” Alexander mentioned.
Armstrong chimed in, saying that she discovered Steve Buscemi was also in the mix. “Interesting, right?” she noted, as they explored potential alternatives for George.
Created by Seinfeld and Larry David, the show, which ran on NBC from 1989 to 1998, became famously known as “The Show About Nothing,” focusing on the humor in everyday life. Alexander explained how competitive David was, recalling an episode where David played a version of George. “He wanted to play George. He could’ve made a good George,” Alexander added, reflecting on how much David enjoyed performing.
Over its nine seasons, “Seinfeld” won ten Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Comedy Series, and was lauded for its unique take on mundane events.
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who portrayed Elaine, spoke about her feelings when the series concluded, revealing a sense of profound sadness because of the close bond formed among the cast. “We all loved each other so much,” she expressed in a May 2023 interview with *People*.
After the show’s end, Louis-Dreyfus enjoyed a flourishing career, with starring roles in series like *Veep*, for which she garnered numerous awards. However, it seems the role of Elaine strikes a chord with audiences, as it remains her most recognized performance.
Reflecting on the show’s lasting impact, she remarked, “I think it’s incredible that it continues to have life. It’s funny and stands the test of time.”
