Jason Bateman Reflects on Relationship with Sister Justine Bateman

Jason Bateman has opened up about his sibling dynamic with sister Justine Bateman in a new interview for Esquire’s Winter Issue, which covers “The Meaning of Life.”

The 56-year-old actor shared that he and his sister, aged 59, don’t see each other very often. “My sister and I don’t see each other much,” he admitted, although he emphasized that there’s no conflict between them. Their bond, he explained, is built on mutual respect and understanding.

“It’s not like, ‘We always see each other at Thanksgiving and Christmas… which is not the case. In a wonderful way,” he said. Jason and his wife Amanda Anka share two daughters, Francesca (19) and Maple (13), while Justine has a son, Duke (23), and a daughter, Janetta (21), with husband Mark Fluent.

He elaborated on his conversations with Justine, saying they are “rich conversations you’d have with an adult friend, not the irritating exchanges you’d have with an adult sibling.” Jason added, “We play together and we are kind to each other because we respect each other as individuals, regardless of blood or not.”

Looking ahead, Jason mentioned he plans to meet Justine for lunch next week.

Both siblings found early success in Hollywood as child actors in the 1980s. Jason started at age 10, evolving from commercials to notable TV roles, including “Little House on the Prairie” and “Silver Spoons.” Justine became a teen idol after her turn as Mallory Keaton on “Family Ties.”

Jason also reflected on how their early fame affected their relationship with their parents, who managed their careers. “My sister and I had a coworker relationship with our parents,” he noted.

As adults, their career paths diverged; Jason continued in acting, directing, and producing while Justine shifted toward filmmaking and writing.

Recently, Justin addressed speculation about potential rifts with Jason stemming from political differences, particularly following Donald Trump’s re-election in 2024, which she described as “amazing.” She clarified her stance, stating she’s not aligned with any political party but was intrigued by Trump’s approach to free speech.

In contrast, Jason supported Kamala Harris during the 2024 campaign, even participating in a virtual rally for her. He has criticized Trump supporters for detaching from facts and common sense.

In a post on social media, Justine stressed that she has no interest in conversations about conflicts between her and Jason, dismissing those who speculate about their relationship based on political views.

Overall, Jason has previously expressed that he and Justine have a healthy relationship that doesn’t require constant contact. “It’s like, let’s build the relationships that adults should or can have,” he said, humorously acknowledging that he could improve as a brother and uncle even with Justine living just a mile away.
