Jason Carter, the eldest of former President Carter's grandsons, said Tuesday that his grandfather was “thrilled” to be voting for Vice President Harris and was ready to “turn the page” on former President Trump.

Carter's son said the family is ready to move on from the Trump era, while condemning what authorities say is the second assassination attempt in three months, which occurred while the former president was golfing in Florida on Sunday.
“He's also very excited to be voting for Kamala Harris. So, for my family and especially for him, he's ready to turn the page on the Donald Trump era, but of course the Carter Center has been involved in democratic elections all around the world,” Jason Carter said in an interview that will air Tuesday night.
“Obviously, any political violence is reprehensible. Regardless of the outcome of the election, we all need to find a way to come together as communities, as parties, as a country. And we all want that. I know he wants that. So, regardless of who wins, we want to ensure that this country and this democracy comes first. And whoever wins the election, we will work with them,” he added.
Former President Carter entered hospice care in February 2023. But his family said he continues to keep up with current events, and Jason Carter said Tuesday that his grandfather is doing “amazingly well.”
“He was admitted to hospice 18 months ago. We never thought we'd get to this moment and now here we are. He's an amazing man. He's still involved in the world. He's in decline physically but he's still out there. He's looking forward to celebrating his birthday,” Jason Carter said.
Carter is the longest-serving US president, and the Carter Center will host a musical event on Tuesday night to celebrate what would have been his 100th birthday.
“Whether it was on the record player, on the campaign trail or on the White House lawn, music was and will continue to be a source of joy, comfort and inspiration to my grandfather,” Jason Carter said. press release Speaking about the event, he said: “I can't think of a better way to celebrate him and his 100th birthday than with an evening of music.”
