Jason Kelce Criticizes NFL Jersey Number Changes
Former Philadelphia Eagles player Jason Kelce has expressed his dissatisfaction with the current jersey numbers that defensive players can wear. As the NFL kicks off the 2021 season, rules regarding jersey numbers for certain positions have changed, and Kelce seems unimpressed.
“I prefer looking at a jersey and instantly recognizing the position of a player,” he noted. It’s just, you know, part of the game.
Although defensive linemen are still bound to wearing numbers between 50-79 and 90-99, linebackers now have more freedom with numbers—shifting from a previous range of 40-59 and 90-99 to now being able to wear numbers from 0-59 and 90-99. It’s a hefty shift.
Kelce also remarked, “I really dislike how the NFL is altering rules for defensive linemen. The iconic numbers add a sense of tradition.” He even pointed to a specific player, Micah Parsons, saying, “I shouldn’t be calling No. 11; he’s just a solid player.”
As for defensive backs, their previous limits of 20-49 have expanded to allow for 0-49 now. Kelce isn’t a fan, quite frankly. “Now it feels like numbers lost their meaning on defense. Everyone seems to wear anything,” he lamented.
On the flip side, offensive players also see considerable changes. Quarterbacks can now wear numbers beyond the traditional 1-19 range, even adding 0 to their options. Running backs and fullbacks are still in a range of 0-49 but can also sport numbers from 80-89. As for wide receivers and tight ends, they have a similar flexibility with numbers.
As the rules evolve, it’s clear Kelce values the familiarity and tradition that these numbers once represented. For him, it’s not just about style; it’s about identity on the field.
