49ers and Panthers Clash Ends in Chaos
Following the 49ers’ 20-9 victory over the Panthers, a scuffle broke out involving Jauan Jennings and Tre’von Mehrig. This altercation took place right after the final whistle, seemingly as a response to a previous low blow against Jennings during the game at Levi’s Stadium.
Jennings, who caught the game’s only touchdown for the 49ers, approached his teammate Jake Tonges before confronting Mehrig. He swung at Mehlig’s head and pushed him, prompting Panthers linebacker Chris Barnes to intervene and pull Jennings away. Amidst the chaos, Jennings had to be restrained by the coaching staff to prevent further confrontation.
Eventually, his teammates helped him to the locker room while Jennings remained visibly agitated. Interestingly, footage aired by ESPN suggested that Mehrig wasn’t innocent either; he appeared to strike Jennings in the groin at one point.
49ers coach Kyle Shanahan labeled Mehrig’s actions a “cheap shot,” expressing pride in Jennings for maintaining control during the game. “The guy took a cheap shot and hit the ball,” Shanahan noted.
In terms of performance, Jennings managed to record five catches for 41 yards, including the team’s lone touchdown. This messy ending mirrored the struggles both teams faced at the quarterback position throughout the night.
Bryce Young, the Panthers’ quarterback, had a difficult outing, throwing two interceptions in the fourth quarter and collecting just 40 passing yards. His overall stats read 169 passing yards and one touchdown.
On the other side, Brock Purdy struggled as well. He threw three interceptions, all in the first half, before finishing with 193 yards and one touchdown. Remarkably, Purdy became the first quarterback this season to throw three interceptions in the opening half, completing just one out of eight long throws, per ESPN Insights. He notably threw two interceptions in the end zone.
