Buenos Aires, Argentina
On Monday, Christi Noem from the Department of Homeland Security signed several agreements with the Argentine government at Casa Rosada, marking a new phase in their relationship.
The primary focus of these agreements was to initiate the reinstatement of Argentina into the Visa Waiver Program (VWP). Although Argentina had been part of the program since 1996, it was removed in 2002 due to economic difficulties leading to unauthorized migration to the United States. With President Javier Milei implementing significant measures to combat inflation, the U.S. is keen on fostering ties with allies in a continent where many governments oppose Trump.
Noem, along with Security Minister Patricia Bullrich, signed a declaration of intent to kick off a two- or three-year process to potentially qualify Argentina for the VWP again. Additionally, they established agreements aimed at streamlining repatriation procedures and bolstering efforts to ensure that fugitives are not released upon being sent back.
Noem noted, “Under President Javier Milei’s administration, Argentina is strengthening its relationship with the United States. We are more committed than ever to our nation’s border security. Presently, Argentina features the lowest visa overstay rate in Latin America.”
When asked about the measures to be taken during the recertification process, Noem assured that precautions will be in place to prevent abuses of the VWP. “All countries in the Visa Waiver Program must meet specific criteria. Argentina is eager to get back on the list, and we’re thrilled about this progress. However, certain thresholds need to be met, and it’s crucial that we collaborate on background checks for people traveling from Argentina,” she explained.
“This is not only vital for our economy but also essential for the safety of both nations. We need to know who is traveling,” she emphasized.
Bullrich indicated that Argentina must support the termination of the contract and expressed eagerness to see that process through.
In regards to Milei’s relationship with the U.S., Noem praised his alignment with Trump’s policies and highlighted his empowerment of Bullrich to ensure the safety of both Argentinians and Americans through rigorous immigration screening.
The only other Latin American nation currently in the VWP is Chile. Noem plans to visit Santiago, Chile’s capital, on Tuesday to sign additional agreements focused on enhancing international security.
