Argentina's President Javier Millay on Thursday announced a new formal alliance with Israel, calling it a “bilateral alliance for freedom and democracy and against terrorism and dictatorship.”
The announcement came on the same day that the International Criminal Court (ICC) approved arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Job Gallant, over the objections of the United States and Argentina.
Mr. Milay, a admirer of Israel and Judaism, accused his predecessor of being close to the Iranian regime responsible for a major terrorist attack on the AMIA Jewish community center in Buenos Aires in 1994.
He vowed to support the fight against terrorism and defend Western values against enemies.
During a visit to Israel earlier this year, Millais signed Treaty on Social Rights with the Government of Israel. He also visited Jewish holy sites and the community of Kibbutz Nir Oz, which was destroyed in the October 7 terrorist attack.
“We will never forget this inhumane attack. [which] Thirty years ago, terrorism punished the Argentine people. And we have not forgotten the barbaric act committed by the terrorist organization Hamas on October 7,” Milley said on Friday.
He called for the unconditional release of the remaining 101 hostages held by Hamas, including eight Argentine nationals.
