Jackson Dart’s performance on Sunday was noticeable.
The rookie quarterback had an impressive day on the NFL field, showcasing both accuracy and an assertive playing style.
“It definitely felt different from the first day last Wednesday,” Dart remarked. “As you acclimate to the plays and the system, the game begins to slow down for you.”
Dart is getting used to executing plays and syncing up with a range of receivers, which demands unique timing for each scenario.
“I had confidence in the various plays we worked on. On Sunday, I felt the coach allowed me a lot of freedom,” Dart explained. “That enabled me to make some adjustments as I saw fit.”
Dart directed a 12-play drive that included a critical third-down completion and a quarterback run with multiple formations.
Perhaps most crucially, he effectively utilized the hard count, catching the defense offside after receiving the snap from Ole Miss.
“I don’t want to play like a machine,” Dart said. “I think that’s just my playing style. When I’m out there, I’m looking to be aggressive in every situation. A saying in the quarterback room is to be aggressive but not reckless—when you see the chance to strike, you have to take it.”
His approach during training camp focuses on making mistakes while practicing but ensuring he doesn’t repeat them. This philosophy seems to mirror that of head coach Brian Daball.
“I just want to capitalize on every opportunity I have, studying as much as I can,” Dart stated. “I’m learning every moment.”
Meanwhile, John Michael Schmitz’s issues with false snaps during practice raised some eyebrows.
He appeared to have a better outing on Monday when the lineman was first padded.
“We need to eliminate those high snaps, no question about it,” Daball commented. “John Michael has been a strong leader for us.”
Daball also highlighted Brian Burns for his hustle after a play that resulted in a collision with Onedale Robinson during Friday’s practice. Burns had limited participation on Sunday due to discomfort, but his effort during camp has been noteworthy, according to Daball.
“He’s shown a lot in this camp,” Daball concluded. “His commitment has been impressive.”
