Giants Make Quarterback Change After Rough Start

The New York Giants, following a disappointing 0-3 start, have decided to switch gears by bringing in rookie quarterback Jackson Dart, as announced by coach Brian Daboll. This move leaves veteran Russell Wilson sidelined.

Wilson, who signed a one-year contract worth $10.5 million this offseason, with incentives potentially pushing his earnings to $20 million, had a shaky debut against the Washington Commanders. He completed less than half of his passes in that game, contributing to a frustrating 21-6 loss.

In a subsequent matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, Wilson had a stronger performance with 450 passing yards and three touchdowns, though his one costly interception played a role in the team’s 40-37 overtime defeat. Still, the Giants found themselves 0-2 after this tough outing.

Things didn’t improve in week three. In a Sunday night game, Wilson managed just 160 yards and two interceptions in a 22-9 loss, averaging only five yards per attempt. These ongoing struggles prompted the Giants to turn to Dart.

Drafted in the first round this past April, Dart is seen as the future for the Giants at quarterback. But, one has to wonder—Is this really the best decision for his growth?

Dart’s first start will be against the formidable 3-0 Los Angeles Chargers, who boast one of the NFL’s top defenses. Not exactly an easy debut.

When Dart entered the league, he was recognized for his strong arm and potential. However, he needed time to develop. This is one reason why the Giants initially signed Wilson and Jameis Winston in the offseason. Starting Dart so early in the season feels, in some way, like a reflection of the coaching staff’s situation rather than a sign of confidence in Dart.

As the 2025 season looms, both coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Shane find themselves under pressure. Since their unexpected playoff appearance in 2022, the team’s performance has taken a downward turn, leading to waning patience from owner John Mara.

Dart’s emergence was generally anticipated for 2025, considering that developing rookie quarterbacks can often extend a coach’s tenure. With the Giants struggling and on track for yet another subpar season, any growth from Dart might just be what saves Daboll’s job.

There’s definitely the chance for Dart to impress early on. That said, he’ll be facing a challenging stretch against teams like the Chargers, Eagles, Broncos, and 49ers. And after that, the Green Bay Packers will visit, presenting yet another tough learning curve for the rookie.

On the decision to bench Wilson—it’s not a surprising move when you consider his performance at the start of the year. New York also seems to have Jameis Winston on standby if they feel they require an additional spark.

Overall, this seems like a strategic decision from Daboll. He began the season with Dart as the second-string quarterback and is now placing him in the spotlight for his first start. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.
