Jaxson Dart faces a balancing challenge as he waits for his opportunity with the Giants.

Jackson Dart Balances Competition and Teamwork as Backup Quarterback for the Giants

I’ve got two sides of Jaxson Dart in my mind: my teammate and my competitor.

The first is focused on being a backup quarterback for the Giants, determined to support starter Russell Wilson and the rest of the team. The second side, well, he’s itching to get onto the field and build on what’s been a solid preseason.

It’s a balancing act for a rookie first-round pick out of Ole Miss as he waits for his moment.

“As a competitor, it’s tough to just watch from the sidelines,” Dart said in his first comments since training camp. “I want to compete, but I also know my job is to concentrate on what I can control. It’s hard—when I’m sitting there, it’s like I’m a fan. It’s definitely a shift in how I view things.”

It’s not easy, especially when fans are vocal after not-so-great performances. Dart is doing his best to stay prepared, mentally rehearsing during practice and leading the scout team. After practice, he’s putting in extra work with third-string quarterback Jamis Winston, going through the entire offensive script to sharpen their skills.

Dart feels a sense of duty in helping the starting lineup. Last week, he mimicked Jaden Daniels. This week, he’s channeling Dak Prescott.

“When I was stepping in as Jaden, I was able to run a bit more; this week, I’ve been working on getting the group accustomed to Dak’s rhythm,” he noted. “Smart cadence is key, and I’m doing my best to bring that.”

At 22, Dart understands that his opportunity to start is just around the corner, though when exactly that will happen is still uncertain. For now, he’s devoted to helping the Giants secure a win against the Cowboys this Sunday.

“My job is to be Russ’ best teammate,” he said.

There are definite advantages to being in this role. As a quarterback, there’s so much to observe. The perspective from the sidelines offers valuable insight.

“You watch guys like [Packers quarterback] Jordan taking his time now, and it’s impressive,” Winston remarked.

Dart added, “I think being on the sideline helps me learn a lot. It prepares me in ways I didn’t expect. I can see the adjustments defense makes and how we can respond.”

When asked about routes he enjoys, Dart reflected on those seen in players like Patrick Mahomes and Peyton Manning. Both approaches have their merits, and he sees the value in each.

But don’t mistake his sitting out as uncertainty or hesitation about being ready.

“I have confidence in myself. Regardless of what opportunity comes my way, I’m prepared for it,” he said. “I fully believe I’m going to succeed whenever my time comes.”
