Giants Star Running Back Jackson Dart’s Recovery Status

The Giants have Jackson Dart on their roster, but they are taking their time with his recovery.

Dart missed the game against the Lions on Sunday and hasn’t yet cleared the NFL’s concussion protocols, according to head coach Mike Kafka, who spoke before Friday’s practice.

Jameis Winston is set to start for the second year in a row.

At the start of the week, there was some hope that Dart, who returned to practice last Friday after suffering a concussion on November 9, would complete all five phases of the protocol by week’s end.

However, he only participated in limited non-contact practices on Wednesday and Thursday.

After a full practice on Friday, there was still a chance he could receive medical clearance, but the Giants are playing it safe.

Dart has been evaluated for concussions four times during his rookie season, passing the first three evaluations.

“He looked great,” Winston commented on Dart’s Thursday practice performance. “Nothing has changed. He’s a young superstar and keeps improving every day.”

It’s important to remember that no two concussions are the same.

For example, Daniel Jones returned from his concussion in 2021 without missing a game, while CJ Stroud of the Texans sat out his third game in a row after suffering a concussion last Thursday.

Like Jones, Dart is a versatile player who’s learning how to avoid big hits in the NFL. It might serve the Giants well to limit their planned running plays for him.

“We’re doing our best for Dart,” interim head coach Kafka remarked before Thursday’s practice. “I hope everything is clear. It’s up to the doctors. When he’s ready, we’re going to let him go.”

Winston, who started the season as the third-string quarterback, will have support from Russell Wilson. Despite leading three touchdown drives against the Packers, he had two turnovers in the fourth quarter.

“You never know when an opportunity like this will come,” Winston said. “I was prepared. I wanted us to win. That’s what matters most. Grateful to be back on the field, just having fun with the guys and throwing the ball.”

Dart’s next opportunity to play comes on Monday Night Football against the Patriots on December 1st.
