Jay Jones, a Democrat, secures victory in Virginia's attorney general election

Virginia’s Attorney General Race

The election results from Virginia indicate that Democratic candidate Jay Jones has unseated incumbent Republican Attorney General Jason Miyares. This outcome was somewhat surprising given Miyares had been polling strongly leading up to the vote—in fact, he had a 75% chance of retaining his position as of October 31.

Jones’s win was overshadowed by controversy. Recently leaked messages from 2022 revealed some alarming comments he made about political rival Todd Gilbert. In these messages, Jones used disturbingly violent language, indicating a desire to harm Gilbert, claiming if he had the opportunity to shoot Gilbert, Adolf Hitler, or Pol Pot, he would choose Gilbert. He further stated he would attend Gilbert’s funeral and disrespect his grave. That’s—well, intense, to say the least.

Furthermore, Jones made derogatory remarks about Gilbert’s family, implying that personal tragedy would need to occur for Gilbert to shift his political views, and painted him and his wife as “evil.” This kind of rhetoric certainly raises eyebrows and, frankly, concerns about judgment.

Republican delegate Carrie Coyner, who received the messages, confirmed their authenticity, expressing disbelief at their content. Jones even suggested he might reconsider his violent thoughts if more police officers were killed. These messages became a focal point during the campaign, including in debates between Jones and Miyares.

Nevertheless, Jones emerged victorious. With 95% of votes counted, he secured 52.9% while Miyares garnered 46.7%. It’s interesting how, despite such controversies, voters made their choice.
