Jay Leno shared his thoughts on Donald Trump's victory on a recent show. The TalkSo he reflected on how he dealt with the news in his previous career as a late-night host.
The discussion started with The Talk host Natalie Morales asked. “We had a historic election last night, and it's not unusual for you guys to do a live show. tonight showafter such a big election. Do you remember those days? ”
Leno replied: In my day we made fun of both sides, but now we have to take sides. Yes, it's a little different,'' he said, referring to the current state of late-night television.
He continued, “But the good thing about this election is that it was fair and honest. Well, I wasn't a fan, but that's okay. It's the President of the United States.”
He then urged viewers to “come together as one.”
Although Leno may not be a Trump “fan,” he maintained that Trump's victory was a fair election result. “There was no wrongdoing. I say everyone was honest. It's a great day for democracy.”
Leno has previously said he wants nothing to do with politics when it comes to comedy.
“I've completely stopped playing politics in my actions,” he said during an appearance on Piers Morgan's show earlier this year. Uncensored. “You know, when I did that; tonight show, The idea was that you made fun of both sides equally…they'd both get mad. And I thought, “Oh, that's good.” You know, they both think you're supporting the other guy. ”
He added: “Now you have to take sides or people will get angry.”
He said he was “against” the idea of removing Trump from the vote in this election, but added, “Well, I'm not a fan. If the people want that person to be president, that's fine. I mean, I'm not a fan. No, it has nothing to do with politics. I don't think morally. I think we can do a little better. You know all these charges.”
Leno resigned tonight show The role was taken over by Conan O'Brien in 2009, and then by Jimmy Fallon.
The current crop of late-night TV hosts leans heavily to the left, especially Jimmy Kimmel, who endlessly mocked the former president on his late-night shows and has openly feuded with President Trump for years.
