Jay Leno Supports Wife Amid Dementia Struggles
Jay Leno remains steadfast in supporting his wife, Mavis, who is facing advanced dementia. This commitment has drawn some surprise within Hollywood circles.
During a recent podcast, Leno, who has been married to Mavis for 45 years, shared that while taking care of her, some people expressed disbelief about his decision, even suggesting he should consider dating. “When you say your vows, people seem shocked—it’s as if they don’t think you can really mean it,” he remarked on the “Maria Shriver and Life Above Noise” podcast.
Leno attempted to maintain a sense of humor through this tough time. He recounted a particularly Hollywood-esque suggestion where someone asked him if he was going to “get a girlfriend now.” He chuckled at the absurdity, saying, “I’m married. I’ve been married for 45 years. It’s like, no, we’re in this together. You can’t just say, ‘I’ll be back later, honey, I’m with my girlfriend.'” He found this perspective amusing, reflecting on how out of touch it felt.
When Shriver prompted him about whether he was surprised by such reactions, Leno replied, “We’re just doing what we’re supposed to do. Taking care of each other, that’s normal. People finding that shocking is what’s abnormal.” He emphasized that standing by Mavis wasn’t a sacrifice but rather a responsibility he had embraced long ago.
Leno, now 75, married Mavis, who is 79, in 1980, and they have no children together. His filing for guardianship of her estate in January 2024 highlighted Mavis’ struggles with “severe neurocognitive impairment, including dementia.” This legal step came after recognizing her inability to manage her affairs due to her condition.
However, Mavis is not just known as Leno’s wife; she has a notable history as an advocate for Afghan women, even being nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2002.
The couple first crossed paths back in the 1970s at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, marking the beginning of a long journey together.
