Jayapal Addresses Comments on Communism in Politics
During a recent episode of CNN’s “The Source,” Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) commented on Democratic U.S. House candidate Daliaza Avila Chevalier’s past praise for communism and Marxism. Jayapal emphasized the importance of being inclusive, stating, “I think we need to understand that no matter what label you put on it, a big tent means a big tent, and voters have to be respected.” She expressed uncertainty about the context of Chevalier’s remarks but noted that campaigns should focus on the needs and desires of working people.
Jayapal also suggested that President Trump is using the term “communism” to describe the Social Democratic Party because he recognizes the popularity of socialism. “He knows that ideas like universal health care and higher wages resonate strongly with people,” she remarked, arguing that mislabeling these policies as communism is misleading.
Host Caitlan Collins raised the question of whether Chevalier’s previous references to communism complicate the argument in favor of democratic socialist candidates. In response, Jayapal defended Chevalier’s campaign, explaining, “I think she ran a campaign that convinced voters she would stand up and fight for them. Regardless of the labels used, we must respect voters and encourage boldness in addressing their needs.” She recognized the challenges many face today, such as rising housing costs and inadequate health care, asserting that it’s crucial to focus on these issues rather than attacking candidates in the Democratic primary.
