Marcus Mariota’s Challenge Without Key Receivers
Once again, it’s Marcus Mariota’s time to shine as the commander—but this time, he lacks his top receiver from Washington.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels will miss his second consecutive game due to a knee injury, and Terry McLaurin is also sidelined with quad issues for the matchup against the Falcons.
Daniels initially got hurt during a Week 2 game against the Packers in “Thursday Night Football.” Even though there was an extended recovery timeline, he wouldn’t practice until the team’s third game.
Interestingly, the commander managed just fine without him, clinching a 41-24 win over the Raiders.
Daniels has attempted to practice lightly, trying out some drills on Wednesday and Thursday, but coach Dan Quinn mentioned that the medical staff hasn’t cleared him yet.
In a recent statement, the quarterback noted he felt “good.”
Quinn remarked on Friday, “He’s working incredibly hard, doing everything he can to come back. But ultimately, he hasn’t been cleared by the doctors.” It sounds like he’s really pushing himself.
McLaurin had a solid showing in Week 3, recording three catches for 74 yards, but his quad injury was exacerbated during a tackle at the 1-yard line after a 56-yard reception.
He didn’t practice Wednesday, which follows reports that he sought a second opinion about his condition.
Quinn is clearly invested in getting him back on the field. “We’re hitting it week by week,” he said, “and we’ll see what happens next week to gauge his progress.”
Without McLaurin, Mariota faces a tougher challenge against the Falcons (1-2) this Sunday, especially after previously navigating the game against the Raiders smoothly.
The veteran quarterback completed 15 of 21 passes, throwing for one touchdown and 207 yards while adding another 40 rushing yards with a score. That’s impressive but can it hold up against a different team?
Currently, the commander is favored by just 2.5 points, according to BetMGM.
