This NFL Week has been quite a whirlwind, especially with all the backup quarterback news making headlines. The situation for the Commanders appears more muddled.
Star quarterback Jayden Daniels was reportedly absent during the media viewing portion of Friday’s practice, as he deals with a knee sprain. This increases the likelihood that Marcus Mariota will face off against his former team, the Raiders, in Week Three.
However, the Commanders’ reporter noted that the media only had a brief window to observe the practice. So, it’s hard to say what Daniels’ absence truly indicates.
Daniels sustained his injury last Thursday during a loss to the Packers, where he was hit a staggering 12 times and sacked four times.
Coach Dan Quinn stated on Wednesday that if needed, Mariota would be ready to step in. “He shows up as a true leader on the team,” Quinn said. “He interacts with teammates in a remarkable way.”
Quinn also mentioned he wanted to see Daniels practice before making a decision about the upcoming game against Las Vegas on Sunday.
Mariota is poised to take on the No. 2 quarterback role, stepping up as preparations kick off this week.
For the Bengals, Jake Browning will lead the team as Joe Burrow is sidelined, recovering from toe surgery. Meanwhile, Tyrod Taylor will take the reins for the Jets while Justin Fields is out due to a concussion.
Mariota expressed his gratitude earlier this week, saying he appreciates the opportunity he has been given. “I always try to maintain the same approach,” he told reporters. “For me, if the chance arises, my routine stays unchanged. I stick to what works for me.”
Washington also faced a tough break with a season-ending Achilles injury occurring during the game against Green Bay, coupled with the fact they couldn’t contain Austin Ekeler.
Overall, while Mariota and the coaching staff don’t seem too worried, it’s clear the team is facing some uncertainties. “Whenever he’s called upon, even for practice or scout team duties, he’s impressive,” offensive coordinator Cliff Kingsbury remarked. “His professionalism and leadership shine through, regardless of his starting status.”
