Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels has sent LSU a cease and desist letter, requesting they stop using his name, image, and likeness (NIL). This follows the decision to assign his No. 5 jersey to cornerback DJ Pickett, as noted by ESPN.
Daniels, who captured the 2023 Heisman Trophy, wore No. 5 during his two years at LSU, leading the Tigers to a 10-3 record while throwing for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns.
According to a spokesperson for Daniels, his family feels deeply disrespected by LSU’s choice to give away his number. They believed that his contributions to the university warranted recognition and protection.
DJ Pickett, who wore No. 3 as a freshman last year, has now switched to No. 5, a number he previously donned during high school in Zephyrhills, Florida.
A spokesperson mentioned that Daniels’ agreement with LSU allows the school to utilize his NIL for 180 days post his final collegiate game, which was against Texas A&M on November 25, 2023, where they won 42-30.
Daniels chose not to participate in the Reliaquest Bowl to focus on the upcoming 2024 NFL Draft, where he was selected second overall. In a letter dated August 5 sent to LSU’s Athletic Director, Virge Ausberry, it was stated that Daniels did not want his number reassigned and expected his wishes to be honored.
The letter emphasized that Daniels’ standout Heisman-winning season solidified his legacy at LSU and giving away his number would reflect poorly on the university’s respect for his achievements.
LSU has yet to retire Daniels’ No. 5 jersey. The cease and desist notice demanded that the university halt any further use of his NIL, warning that any continued usage after receipt of this notice would be considered intentional and subject to legal action.
Former LSU coach Brian Kelly revealed that he hadn’t given Pickett the No. 5 jersey because he understood Daniels’ desire to keep it. He added that No. 5 had been promised to Pickett when he was hired.
Current LSU head coach Lane Kiffin mentioned earlier that Pickett was assured No. 5 during his recruitment, which took place before he signed with the Tigers in December 2024.
Pickett, standing at 6-foot-5, practiced in No. 3 earlier this year. Kiffin remarked that his commitment to Pickett was based on the promise made and wasn’t something he was in a position to change.
Daniels, who previously spent three seasons at Arizona State before transferring to LSU, faced injuries throughout last season but was recognized as the 2024 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year.
