NFL: Week 3 AFC Secret Superstars
Success in the NFL often shines a spotlight on the stars, but sometimes, it’s the lesser-known players who step up in critical moments. They can be overlooked for many reasons. Maybe they’re in smaller markets where their achievements don’t get the attention they deserve, or perhaps they’re buried on the depth chart behind bigger names who aren’t performing as well. And, well, there may be a coach who just hasn’t realized that promoting a certain player could lead to better outcomes.
Regardless of these factors, we like to highlight those underrated players through our offseason Hidden Gems and in-season Secret Superstars series. So, let’s dive into our AFC Secret Superstars for this week.
Jaylen Warren, RB, Pittsburgh Steelers
The Pittsburgh Steelers struggled to establish a solid run game in the first two weeks of the season, accumulating just 149 yards on 44 carries, averaging a mere 3.4 yards per carry. Their performance metrics were pretty stark, with only 98 yards accrued after contact and a disappointing EPA per run of -0.08.
This was particularly tough with Rico Dowdle sidelined due to a toe injury and Jaylen Warren nursing a shoulder issue. Facing the Cincinnati Bengals’ defense, which had allowed just 3.9 yards per carry and had impressive defensive metrics, it didn’t seem like a good setup for success.
Yet, against expectations, Warren delivered what could have been a defining game. He garnered 127 rushing yards on 17 carries, achieving an impressive 7.5 yards per carry and an astonishing 8.29 yards after contact. His EPA per attempt clocked in at +0.18—well above any expectations for a Steelers back facing such a formidable defense.
On top of that, Warren caught three passes for 49 yards, despite pregame advice suggesting that the team should avoid using him in the passing game due to his injury. He effectively showcased power, speed, and agility, making it look effortless against a tough Bengals defense. It’s even worth mentioning that a fantastic 87-yard run was nullified due to a holding penalty—it’s mind-boggling to think of the stats he could have posted otherwise!
After the Steelers’ 30-27 victory, quarterback Aaron Rodgers praised Warren’s toughness and energy, noting that he’s one of the most resilient players he’s been around. For Steeler fans, Warren’s performance has been a welcome relief, especially as the team gears up for their next game against the Browns.
Adetomiwa Adebawore, DL, Indianapolis Colts
Leading up to their recent game against the Houston Texans, the Colts’ defense had been struggling mightily, ranking last in the league in yards allowed per play and EPA. However, Sunday’s 19-17 win seemed to provide some much-needed relief, as they allowed only 223 net yards, showcasing marked improvements.
A significant contributor to this transformation was Adetomiwa Adebawore, who put on quite the performance with 1.5 sacks and four total pressures in just 13 pass-rush snaps. With remarkable agility and strength, he was a force against the Texans’ offensive line.
Statistics indicated that whenever Adebawore was on the field, the Colts allowed significantly fewer yards per play compared to when he was off. His ability to disrupt plays could lead to more playing time, which, as he himself noted, would be beneficial as he continues to develop next to veteran DeForest Buckner.
Genesis Smith, Safety, Los Angeles Chargers
For Chargers fans, finding silver linings has been essential in rough times. Even in a disappointing 24-16 loss to the Buffalo Bills, there were some bright spots, particularly from rookie safety Genesis Smith. Smith’s performance included two interceptions off quarterback Josh Allen, helping to limit a previously high-scoring offense.
Both interceptions showcased Smith’s potential, as he effectively read the plays and executed his defensive assignments with a confidence that made him look like a seasoned pro. Despite the turnovers the Chargers gained from Buffalo, they unfortunately fell short in the end, leaving them in an unusual position where making history for losing while winning the turnover battle was becoming a trend. Still, having a rising star like Smith could be a crucial reason for optimism in future games.
