Knicks vs. Celtics Showdown This Thursday

Thursday’s game between the Knicks and Celtics at Madison Square Garden promises to be more significant than a typical regular-season matchup.

This encounter marks the first time the Knicks will face Jayson Tatum this season, who is back after a remarkably quick recovery from a torn Achilles tendon. It’s his 16th game since the injury.

If the Knicks don’t win, their hopes of securing the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference will likely vanish, though they’re also aiming to prevent the Cavaliers from slipping into the No. 3 spot.

This game could serve as a precursor to a potential playoff rematch. If both teams finish as the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, they’ll likely clash in the second round, assuming they each navigate their first-round matches successfully.

Karl-Anthony Towns expressed his perspective on the situation after Wednesday’s practice. “I’m all about focusing on the now and then looking at what’s ahead,” he said. “Right now, tomorrow is the most crucial game because it’s the next one.”

Meanwhile, All-NBA first-teamer Jaylen Brown, who may not play Thursday due to Achilles tendonitis, has been instrumental in guiding the Celtics through what many expected to be a rebuilding year. This is especially notable given Tatum’s absence for much of the season and Boston’s offloading of veteran players in the offseason.

Now that Tatum is back, even if he seems a bit out of sorts initially, the Celtics have an impressive 13-2 record over the 15 games he has played since returning. Together, Tatum and Brown form one of the most formidable duos in the league, something the Knicks front office, led by Leon Rose, considered when assembling their roster. They’ve paired defensive talents like OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges to contain them.

“Those two can easily score 40 points collectively on any given night,” said coach Mike Brown on Wednesday. “They alleviate scoring pressure from one another, which makes them incredibly dangerous.”

It’s worth noting that Tatum suffered his injury in Game 4 of last year’s playoff series at MSG, adding an emotional layer to the matchup.

Reflecting on that experience, Tatum remarked, “I’m not thrilled about returning there. The last time was quite traumatic for me.” He acknowledged that facing the Knicks again was inevitable, saying, “We knew we had to deal with this at some point. And now… well, it has to be this Thursday.”

The Knicks, however, are eager to take on the Celtics at full strength. Towns noted, “It’s a privilege to compete against such top-tier talent, and I want to test my skills against the best.”

Bridges shared his thoughts: “Tatum’s quick return is incredible and highlights his dedication and the expertise of his support team in helping him recover swiftly.”

Mike Brown referred to Tatum as “a remarkable person.” Yet, things seem slightly different for Jaylen Brown.

He’s taken on a bit of a villainous role regarding the Knicks, making headlines for subtle jabs and even playful trolling. “We have to hear from the Knicks fans, who have been quite vocal this year,” he joked during a Netflix special before the season, hinting at last year’s playoff outcomes. In December, he outright stated, “Forget the Knicks,” showcasing his playful rivalry.

Despite this, he acknowledged the good work by Celtics coach Joe Mazzula, who defied pre-season expectations by effectively guiding the team.

“Even if he’s not getting all the accolades,” Brown commented, “Mazzula deserves recognition for what he’s accomplished.” He noted how the team’s structure, characterized by length and toughness, has made them a formidable opponent this season. “They’re relentless,” he added, affirming the contributions of every player, including those who stepped up in critical roles.

The Knicks-Celtics rivalry adds an extra layer of excitement to this matchup, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling game.
