CHICAGO — Jazz Chisholm Jr. has officially been placed on the disabled list and the Yankees have designated Eniel de los Santos their replacement just over two weeks after acquiring him in a trade.
Those were the highlights of a series of roster changes the Yankees made Wednesday, which also included the calling up of Will Warren (a spot starter against the White Sox) and Oswaldo Peraza in place of Chisholm.
The Yankees are still gathering medical opinions to determine the severity of Chisholm’s UCL injury and whether surgery will be necessary, but the team is describing the injury as a “sprained left elbow.”
Parting ways with de los Santos was somewhat of a surprise given that the Yankees only recently acquired him (the minor league relief pitcher from the Padres in exchange for Triple-A outfielder Brandon Lockridge).
But the right-hander struggled in his five appearances with the Yankees, giving up 10 runs in 6 1/3 innings, including seven runs in 1 2/3 innings against the White Sox on Monday night.
The Yankees had to bring in a pitcher on Wednesday to keep Warren in the starting spot (and fill the maximum of 13 pitchers on the 26-man roster).
Warren could be demoted to Triple-A immediately after pitching, leaving a relief pitcher like Scott Efros to join the Yankees on Friday at Detroit.
Meanwhile, Peraza could potentially slot into the third base lineup alongside Oswaldo Cabrera and DJ LeMahieu in Chisholm’s absence.
He’s a skilled defensive infielder who has also played third base, but has struggled to hit in the major leagues.
Peraza, just 24, was delayed this season after suffering a right shoulder injury this spring.
But he’s been hitting well over the past month-plus with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, batting .303 with a .914 OPS and seven home runs in his final 35 games.
Peraza appeared in 52 games for the Yankees in 2023, playing the majority of those games as a third baseman and performing well there.
However, he struggled at the plate, batting just .191 with a .539 OPS in 191 at-bats.
