Jazz Chisholm Jr. Faces Backlash After Base Running Mistake Against Marlins
New York Yankees player Jazz Chisholm Jr. stirred up attention on social media this past Saturday due to a base running blunder against his former team, the Miami Marlins.
In the second inning, Chisholm found himself on base when he attempted to advance but ended up straying too far. He made a rather unusual choice—taking a nap on the base, which didn’t go unnoticed.
As the play unfolded, Chisholm was caught off guard when Marlins’ second baseman Xavier Edwards made a quick throw to first base, resulting in a double play.
During the broadcast, Yankees announcers criticized Chisholm’s decision, dubbing it a “brain fart.” He wasn’t the only one facing scrutiny; Yankees manager Aaron Boone also received flak from fans online.
Michael Kay, a well-known play-by-play commentator, questioned, “What was Chisholm thinking?” This sentiment resonated with many viewers.
Color commentator Paul O’Neill expressed his disbelief, exclaiming, “What’s going on?” It seemed Chisholm’s misstep sparked a lively discussion in the Yankees’ dugout, with Boone and base coach Travis Chapman appearing to have an animated conversation about it.
Despite the backlash, Chisholm defended his actions, claiming he was trying to press the defense. “I was just being aggressive,” he remarked, indicating his desire to force an error from Edwards. He added, “I know this field well, having played here before.”
Boone later stated that he didn’t consider pulling Chisholm from the game, suggesting that he wanted to give him a chance to learn from the experience.
Unfortunately for the Yankees, the game concluded with a 2-0 loss to the Marlins, leaving them with just two hits. Chisholm finished the day with a line of 2-2, including a walk and a strikeout.
