Jazz Chisholm Jr. Shines in Yankees’ Victory

In a lively afternoon game, Jazz Chisholm Jr. showcased his skills, contributing with a home run, a triple, and four runs batted in. After the Yankees claimed a 12-5 victory over the A’s, opinions were mixed about what aspect of Chisholm’s performance shone brightest.

“Honestly, I think Jazz’s defense was more impactful than what he did at the plate today,” Marcus Stroman remarked following the game, which secured a series win for the Yankees.

Playing at second base, Chisholm’s effort likely provided the Yankees some added flexibility as they consider potential trades before the deadline. Yet, he appeared to fit naturally at third base, even if re-positioning him was initially surprising for some.

Time and again, the ball found its way to Chisholm, converting what could’ve been difficult plays into manageable situations.

At one point, with runners on first and second, both attempted to steal as Stroman induced a ground ball from Jacob Wilson.

Chisholm skillfully tagged lead runner Willie Masiver at third, then executed a precise throw to complete a double play, showing off his quick instincts and strong arm.

“He made several key plays in important moments—stuff that doesn’t always happen,” Stroman noted, clearly impressed.

Chisholm also demonstrated his arm strength with long throws, aided by Paul Goldschmidt as he handled several challenging hits, including a chopper from Lewis Urias during five innings.

“I enjoy letting loose every once in a while,” Chisholm stated, adding that throwing hard is usually reserved for close plays at second base. He also made a significant catch against the railing in the eighth, tumbling into the left field net—an impressive effort.

Aaron Judge praised Chisholm, saying he “can change the game on both sides.” Since returning from the injured list, Chisholm’s bat has been especially productive, with a .318 average and six home runs over 23 games as he looks to maintain composure at the plate.

“Even with the home runs, I was focusing on my fastball and trying to connect,” Chisholm explained. “I aimed for a 70% swing, and it paid off.”

In a separate situation, Anthony Volpe faced a controversial call at the end of the eighth inning when umpire Chad Fairchild ruled that he hadn’t checked his swing.

According to manager Boone, Volpe didn’t argue much, but Fairchild cautioning him to stop his arm gestures didn’t sit well. Volpe continued his protests, leading to further frustration.

Pitcher JT Brubaker struggled a bit, allowing two hits and walking three in six innings while being charged with four runs.

JC Eskara rejoined the team after a personal event, although Ben Rice caught behind the plate in his stead for the second game in three days. Boone expressed hope that Austin Wells could start catching again soon to give Eskara more time to adjust.

Despite having two catchers ahead of Rice in the lineup, Boone indicated he expects Rice to start regularly moving forward.

Rice’s performance has been quite encouraging—he went 2-for-2 with a walk and has shown reliable defense, making him a viable option. Boone praised Rice’s performance, stating, “So far, that’s been really good.” He noted that a catcher who performs well can often go unnoticed, which is typically a good sign.

As the manager leading the pennant-winning team, Boone is slated to guide the American League for the upcoming All-Star Game. While not directly involved in roster selections anymore, he mentioned the importance of letting other managers know about player recommendations when the time comes.

Once the roster is finalized, Boone looks forward to crafting his lineup. “I want to take the reins on that,” he said, smiling as he acknowledged he hasn’t worked out specifics with the league yet.

With Oswald Peraza starting at second base and DJ LeMahieu taking a break after three straight games, the Yankees are keeping their lineup flexible as they navigate the season.
