Cincinnati Triumphs Over Yankees
Cincinnati – Jazz Chisholm Jr. found himself in a heated moment on Tuesday night, and Jose Trevino might have played a role in it.
By Wednesday, though, the only red Chisholm was focused on was the field sheet where his two-run home run had landed. He rounded the bases, catching Trevino’s eye for a playful moment, with the Yankees’ third baseman sharing a laugh with his former teammates.
After being ejected in the ninth inning, Chisholm let his bat do the talking, leading the Reds to a 7-1 victory, which helped them avoid being swept at the Great American Ballpark.
Max Fried continued his strong performance, contributing to the Yankees’ (46-34) win—his fourth in the last 13 games—by pitching seven solid innings, allowing only one run and maintaining a narrow lead over the Rays in the AL East.
Chisholm wasn’t present for the last two and a half innings of their loss on Tuesday due to his ejection. Upset about the call, he was still discussing the incident on third base when he noticed home plate umpire Mark Wegner watching him.
Curiously, Chisholm questioned Wegner about the scrutiny.
Before the game on Wednesday, manager Aaron Boone remarked that Trevino “contributed to the ejection” by having Wegner’s attention on Chisholm, perhaps jokingly. Video footage showed Trevino, later on, appearing to direct Wegner’s gaze towards Chisholm.
When Chisholm hit the 11th home run of his season in the third inning, he celebrated with a bat flip and a leisurely trot around the bases, seemingly saying something to Trevino as he crossed home plate.
The Yankees struggled in the first two innings, plagued by mistakes from the last couple of weeks, before Chisholm’s blast turned things around.
Despite having six runners on base, they managed to score just once, courtesy of Trent Grisham’s RBI single, leaving them 8 for 8 with runners in scoring positions, along with two walks and six strikeouts.
In their series, the Yankees finished with a disappointing 5-43 with runners in scoring position, but they managed to secure the victory this time.
Jasson Domínguez had a notable night, scoring twice and hitting four times in just two innings.
While Chisholm had a slow error that allowed only one run for the Reds, the Yankees made a late-game scramble. Ben Rice, who was on third, tagged up when Anthony Volpe sent a fly ball. Rice took a few steps toward home but hesitated and returned to the bag.
A casually thrown cutoff by Ellie de la Cruz meant Rice was safe, despite a late throw home from shortstop.
Aaron Judge stepped up, going 5-1 and contributing two RBI doubles in the sixth inning, further solidifying their performance.
