Without superstar JuJu Watkins, USC is experiencing a fresh dynamic.
This new player, Jazzy Davidson, is proving she can dominate on the court, elevating the Trojans’ status in women’s basketball within the Big Ten.
In a recent game, USC triumphed over Indiana with a score of 79-73 at the Galen Center, marking the team’s fifth consecutive win. Davidson’s performance further cements her reputation as one of the nation’s top freshmen.
Just four days after achieving a career-high of 27 points, Davidson followed up with another impressive showing, scoring 24 points, grabbing six rebounds, and recording three steals, three assists, and two blocks—playing a full 40 minutes.
This marks her third straight game with 20 or more points.
“She produces statistics that seem almost absurd, but in reality, they’re remarkable,” noted USC coach Lindsey Gottlieb after the Trojans improved to 16-9 overall and 8-6 in the Big Ten. “You could say she’s overachieving. The numbers truly reflect her growth as a freshman, and we’ve known for a while that she can do almost anything on the court.”
Davidson’s ability to score with a variety of layups and jumpers, alongside strong contributions from teammates Carla Dunn (16 points) and Kennedy Smith (15 points), leads to exciting possibilities for the remainder of the season.
Davidson expressed, “This feels right for me. My teammates and coaches have been incredibly supportive, and that builds my confidence. I’m really thankful for that.”
What does that mean?
USC appears to be stepping away from the NCAA Tournament bubble. They’re in a three-way tie for seventh in the Big Ten, alongside Washington and Maryland, and only two games behind fifth-place Minnesota.
“We’re competing with any team outside the top tier, aiming for great seeding, and our focus is on improving and sticking to the winning mentality that has been working for us,” Gottlieb remarked.
Turning point
Junior guard Malia Samuels came through with crucial defensive plays in the closing minutes as USC managed to fend off Indiana, despite the Hoosiers missing their leading scorer, Shea Chesky.
She made a vital steal, and while the team couldn’t convert it into points, her efforts led to a jump ball and forced a shot-clock violation on Indiana, ultimately turning the momentum.
Samuels eventually connected on a shot from Indiana’s Renee Beaumont and assisted Laura Williams for a layup, pushing USC ahead 79-71.
MVP
Recently recognized as National Freshman of the Week, Davidson is steadily adding accolades to her growing collection.
“We recognize her talent, and she is a continuous presence for us,” Gottlieb said. “There’s no one better right now. The way she influences winning and elevates her teammates makes her a truly extraordinary player.”
To the next
The Trojans have a week off before their next home match against Wisconsin, followed by road games against No. 8 Ohio State on February 22 and Penn State on February 25.
