Turning Point USA Event at Ole Miss
On October 29, students, staff, and faculty made their way through the oak-lined paths of the University of Mississippi for a Turning Point USA event featuring Vice President J.D. Vance. This gathering was also a tribute to Charlie Kirk, the co-founder of the organization, along with his widow, Erica Kirk.
Leslie Luckman, who leads the Ole Miss TPUSA chapter, expressed pride in their university being a forerunner among Turning Point USA chapters nationwide. She remarked, “This is a pivotal moment when many are eager to engage in politics, particularly Gen Z.”
The TPUSA chapter at Ole Miss has seen remarkable growth, going from about 200 members to a staggering 1,500 since Luckman took over. “Every chapter meeting reaches capacity, which, I suppose, is a fantastic problem to have,” said Luckman, a law student. “People are showing interest in getting involved, especially in conservative views.”
Luckman pointed to recent events as a catalyst for increased student engagement: “The tragedies motivated people to participate not just online but in person,” she said, referring to Erica Kirk as a powerful figure. “I think she embodies resilience. Her experience will help expand this organization even further, especially now.”
There have been reports from other chapters across the country noting similar surges in involvement since Kirk’s passing on September 10. Luckman notes while support for such organizations is rising, there are ongoing challenges. “The work we’ve done on campus is commendable, but it’s also a critical time to push a strong message moving forward,” she commented.
