JD Vance clashes with CBS anchor over unvetted refugees: ‘I don’t want that person in my country’

Vice President J.D. Vance debated unvetted illegal immigrants and refugees with CBS anchor Margaret Brennan during an interview on “Face the Nation” Sunday.

Mr. Brennan asked Mr. Vance about his thoughts on President Donald Trump, who through an executive order suspended refugee resettlement efforts while calling for increased vetting of visa applications.

She specifically asked if he was on the sidelines. his past comments He argued that the United States should not “abandon those who have been properly tested.”

“Well, Margaret, I don't agree that all of these immigrants and refugees are being properly tested,” Vance said. “In fact, we know that there have been cases in which people who allegedly underwent proper testing were literally planning terrorist attacks in our country. As you may remember, that happened during the campaign. So obviously not all of these foreigners were planning terrorist attacks. They have been properly vetted.”

Brennan pressed Vance on whether he stood by his comments as the resettlement process for tens of thousands of Afghan refugees remains stalled by executive order.

Vance cited a recent example involving an Afghan man in Oklahoma who was charged with planning a terrorist attack in October. He first came to the country in September 2021 after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan and went through multiple vetting processes.

“I don't want my children to share neighborhoods with people who haven't been properly tested, and I don't want that for my children, so I don't want it for the children of other American citizens. “I'm not going to force it,” Vance said.

“No. It was a very special case,” Brennan said. “We don't know if he became radicalized when he got here or if he became radicalized while living here…”

“I don't really care, Margaret,” Vance replied. “I don't want people like that in my country, and I think most Americans would agree with me.”

Vance also defended President Trump's executive order to end birthright citizenship for children of illegal immigrants, as Brennan argued that “this country was founded by immigrants.”
