The Republican vice presidential nominee, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, campaigned in two states, Wisconsin and Michigan, on Tuesday in a blistering attack on the Democratic Party and its corporate media allies.
Vance has been questioned by hostile reporters, including a New York Times correspondent who covered his recent comments about Haitian immigrants allegedly eating pets in Springfield, Ohio. Media have repeatedly alleged that Vance fabricated the allegations, but the senator maintains that his own constituents were the ones who first reported them.
“It's bullying on an industrial scale.”
During the Wisconsin rally, Vance asked a Times reporter to read out a question.
“This is the New York Times, so don't blame them.” Vance said..
The reporter responded, “The newspaper of record, The New York Times.” The reporter then said he wanted to ask about Springfield and continued his questioning.
“You said that regardless of what the exact facts are here, it's worth raising the larger issue of towns being overrun with immigrants,” the reporter said.
Vance corrected the Times reporter, saying, “Regardless of the exact facts, that's not what I said. I said you have to listen to what people are saying. The press has been trying over the last few days to say I made this story up. I didn't make anything up. I just listened to people who were telling me these things.”
“That's the point,” the reporter responded. “Your willingness to shed light on issues that you think are important. And do you know where your line is in that regard? What are you willing not to say in order to make a point that is important to you?”
Vance smiled as he answered questions, while supporters at the rally booed reporters.
“This is not a question for the crowd, this is a question for him,” a Times reporter grilled attendees.
Vance responded: “What I won't say is that The New York Times is a respectable newspaper. That's one of the things I won't say.”
“All joking aside,” the senator continued, “if someone called me and said, 'This is what's going on in Springfield,' we probably would have ignored it. If four, five, six, seven people tell me something is going on in Springfield and there's someone who's not going to listen to them, who's not going to take their concerns seriously, then it's my job as a United States senator to listen to my constituents.”
At the same meeting, CBS News reporter He asked Vance whether he had a “responsibility to fact-check” the claims made by constituents.
“I think the media has a responsibility to check the facts instead of lying about the residents of Springfield,” Vance countered.
The crowd responded to the senator's remarks with overwhelming applause.
Governor Vance ignored long-standing concerns from local residents about the impact the migrant crisis is having on housing shortages and rising auto insurance costs in the area, and blasted media members who only showed up to fact-check residents about claims of pet eating.
“They just tell their favorite stories, and that's all the American media wants to tell,” Vance explained. “And of course the American media goes to Springfield, jumps in and attacks everyone who dares to complain about the state of the town. That's not journalism, that's not truth-seeking. That's bullying on an industrial scale. I think the media should be ashamed of themselves.”
Vance also Meeting in Sparta, MichiganIn his speech, he slammed the left and its media allies for spreading inflammatory rhetoric about Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump, claiming that their hateful rhetoric fueled the recent assassination attempt on the former president.
“Stop lecturing Donald Trump that two people tried to kill him and then he toned down his rhetoric. It's ridiculous. Tell that to Kamala Harris. Tell that to Joe Biden. Tell that her surrogates are saying, 'We need to get rid of Donald Trump,' and so on. They need to stop this bullshit,” Vance said.
Recent Stop in Atlanta, GeorgiaVance referred to the recent assassination attempt on Trump and called on Democrats to stop calling the former president a fascist.
“If you tell the American people that this person is the end of democracy, that this person should be removed, thankfully, most people will ignore you, but there will be some crazy people out there who will take matters into their own hands and listen to the crazy words that you're putting out there,” Vance said.
“You know what the big difference is between conservatives and liberals? Nobody has tried to kill Kamala Harris in the last few months. And we've had two people try to kill Donald Trump in the last few months. I think that's pretty strong evidence that the left needs to hold its tongue,” he said.
