Political commentator Bill Kristol said on CNN’s “OutFront” on Friday that former President Donald Trump’s running mate, Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), is “weird” and outside the mainstream.
“Normally the choice of a vice presidential nominee doesn’t matter that much. The choice of a vice presidential nominee doesn’t matter that much. But Vance is unconventional, he’s eccentric and he’s self-aware,” Kristol said.
He continued, “You know, typically a scandal, and we’ve had it many times before with someone who has used this quote. A scandal is something that someone said 15 years ago, or law enforcement said 25 years ago, or five years ago, when they were in college, or whatever. People look at it for a day or two and decide this person has been in public office for 20 years. It’s not conclusive. Nobody knows anything about Mr. Vance. He’s been in the senator for 18 months, but these statements were made three years ago.”
He added: “This is his current position. This is something he said in 2007, not something that has happened since. This isn’t the usual flurry, and I think it has a certain resonance and a certain seriousness in what it’s saying about Mr. Vance.”
