JD Vance Suspended from Bluesky Shortly After Joining
On Wednesday, Vice President JD Vance found himself suspended from the left-leaning social media platform, Bluesky, mere minutes after creating his account and making his first post.
“Hello Bluesky! I’ve heard this app is a good spot for political discussions and common sense analysis,” Vance wrote in his initial message on one of X’s competitors. “I’m quite excited to be here with all of you.”
In his early activities on the platform, Vance referenced the recent Supreme Court ruling that backed Tennessee’s restrictions on transgender medical care for minors.
He noted that he found Justice Clarence Thomas’ opinion regarding this topic to be significant. Vance shared a link with screenshots of a statement from the conservative justice endorsing the 6-3 ruling.
He elaborated on the issue: “Many so-called ‘experts’ have relied on poor arguments and subpar science to promote experimental therapy for our youth. Some of these scientists, I think, could be influenced by the substantial resources they receive from major pharmaceutical companies to push these treatments onto children.”
Shortly after posting, Vance announced via X that his Bluesky account had been suspended. According to Axios journalist Marc Caputo, this occurred within just 12 minutes of joining.
“Not found. Account has been suspended,” was the message that appeared on Vance’s Bluesky page. However, the suspension was short-lived, as his account was restored just minutes later.
Interestingly, it seems Vance’s post did not violate Bluesky’s community guidelines.
Bluesky’s suspension was said to be a precautionary measure triggered by concerns of impersonation involving the Vice President, rather than a response to any specific content. A spokesperson explained, “Vance’s account was temporarily flagged by an automated system designed to identify spoofing attempts that have targeted public figures before. The account was promptly restored, allowing everyone to engage with him.” They also added that the platform welcomes Vance to the conversation.
Bluesky launched as an alternative social media platform after Elon Musk’s acquisition of Twitter. Since the 2024 election of President Trump, the platform has seen impressive growth—tripling its user base from 10 million to 30 million between November 2024 and May 2025, according to the Pew Research Center.
As this growth has attracted a predominantly liberal audience, some users expressed displeasure at Vance’s presence, with one urging them to report his account for “misinformation.” Others echoed similar sentiments.
