Republican vice presidential nominee and Marine Corps veteran Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio on Thursday spoke at a Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) facility in Pennsylvania, blasting Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, R-Minn., for lying about his military service.
“We’re not attacking his honorable service, we’re attacking his dishonesty about that service. That’s not honorable. That’s the height of dishonor, and that’s why Tim Walz should not be vice president of the United States,” Vance said.

Waltz, who served in the Army National Guard Reserves for 24 years, falsely claimed to be a “retired master sergeant,” or E-9, even though he retired at the rank of master sergeant (E-8). He was promoted to interim master sergeant but did not meet the requirements to remain at that rank or to be retired.
Waltz has also claimed to be “at war” despite never having served in combat, misleadingly described himself as a veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) despite never having served in Afghanistan, and implied he “came home” from the war despite having served in Europe.

Additionally, Waltz retired from the Army when he learned his unit would be deployed to Iraq. As his unit’s command sergeant major, he was responsible for a battalion of about 100 enlisted men. Instead of leading them into a war, he decided to retire early and run for Congress.
The Harris-Waltz campaign argued that Waltz’s statement that he had carried a weapon “in a war” was a “gaffe,” but did not address Waltz’s other claims, only accusing Vance of attacking his military service.
“Let’s summarize the truth: Tim Waltz said he carried a weapon in a war. He never went to war. Tim Waltz said he didn’t know the unit was going to be deployed to Iraq, yet his own press release at the time also said he knew exactly that,” Vance said.
Tim Waltz claimed to be a Master Sergeant and even had that rank printed on his challenge coin, a rank he knew he never held, and now Kamala Harris has shown terrible judgment and decided her way out of this political issue is to claim that she and Tim Waltz are victims.
“I think the victims are veterans. They blame this man. [who] “The people who want to be vice president are not telling the truth, they’re lying,” Vance said.
“Everybody standing with me has sacrificed something for this country. Some of us, like Brian, have sacrificed more than most Americans can imagine,” Vance said of the veterans standing next to him.
He added:
But each of us respects the service of all our veterans, whether they went to war or not. If you did what this country asked of you, you deserve to be celebrated. You deserve to actually receive what this country promised you. This is not to disparage anyone’s service, including Tim Walz.
“This is about calling out dishonesty and asking Kamala Harris, ‘Why are you showing such poor judgment by supporting a man who insulted veterans and lied about his military service?'” he continued. “If Kamala Harris wants to lead this country, if she wants to lead millions of active duty military and reservists and millions of veterans, she should stand before the media and explain why Tim Walz lied.”
