Vice President J.D. Vance Discusses California’s Challenges

Vice President J.D. Vance recently spoke with podcaster Joe Rogan about the troubling state of California, sharing that it reminds him of a “Third World country” under the leadership of Governor Gavin Newsom.

During the conversation, Vance reflected on a drive he took through a struggling neighborhood in Los Angeles while heading to an upscale Christmas party. The stark difference between the two environments hit him hard. “You know, this reminds me of going to the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince, Haiti,” he said, provoking laughter from Rogan. He described it as a situation where immense wealth and privilege exist amidst overwhelming poverty and despair.

“Honestly, it’s the first time I’ve felt that a part of America, like this one, is closer to the Third World than anywhere I could have imagined,” he added.

Joe Rogan Comments on California’s Issues

Vance shared that his wife, Usha, hails from Southern California and that seeing the deterioration of Los Angeles deeply saddens him. “Every time I’m there, I can’t help but think about how it used to be a typical American city,” he remarked. He noted the beautiful architecture and great weather, expressing disbelief at the existence of areas like Skid Row, questioning, “How can this happen in any state or city?”

Rogan, who has lived in California, chimed in about his reasons for leaving and mentioned acquaintances who want to escape the state but are struggling to sell their homes.

Criticism of Newsom’s Approach

During the discussion, Rogan characterized Newsom’s responses as reminiscent of gaslighting, where he portrays the state as thriving—”Oh, the GDP of the fifth-largest country in the world. That’s California.” Rogan pointed out that California’s issues had existed prior to Newsom’s governorship.

Vance humorously suggested that examining U-Haul truck rental prices could indicate a state’s wellbeing. Rogan recalled fond memories of his time in California, marked by enjoyable activities and pleasant weather, until he felt that “politics ruined California.” He also mentioned that the Skid Row area, infamous for its homeless encampments and crime, appears to be expanding.

Inquiries to Newsom’s office for comments went unanswered.
