Vigil for January 6th Anniversary Sparks Controversy
Vice President J.D. Vance recently shared a meme featuring Congressional Democrats who attended a candlelight vigil on Tuesday to mark the fifth anniversary of January 6. The meme included an image of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer lighting candles at the U.S. Capitol while wearing sombreros.
Vance posted a video clip on his verified account that prominently featured the Democratic leaders without any additional commentary. The original video clip was shared by an account called “End Wokeness,” which sarcastically captioned it, “Breaking news: Congressional Democrats just held a candlelight vigil to commemorate the 6th anniversary of January 5th.”
During the vigil, Schumer and Jeffries spoke about the significance of the event, which was aimed at remembering the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol and honoring the law enforcement officers and others who lost their lives during the chaos.
“We must never forget what happened on January 6, five years ago,” Schumer stated, emphasizing the need for future generations to remember the event. He referred to that day as “the greatest crisis for democracy in a century.” Schumer recounted how he and others were evacuated as they were only feet away from the insurrectionists.
He praised the Capitol Police, stating, “On January 6th, the Capitol Police officers were heroes.” He also pledged to remember the sacrifices made that day.
Jeffries labeled January 6 as a “violent insurrection incited by Donald Trump” and commended law enforcement for their protection of the Capitol. “We owe our heroes an eternal debt of gratitude,” he added, stressing the importance of their sacrifices.
After a moment of silence for the victims, attendees sang “God Bless America.” However, Vance’s repost did not acknowledge the vigil or its victims, focusing instead on the doctored image.
Some supporters of Vance interpreted his post as a critique of what they perceived as political theatrics, with one user commenting on the “theater antics” of the Democrats. Another remarked on the need for Democratic leaders to prioritize governance over symbolic gestures.
Democratic leaders have often faced backlash from conservative commentators, who view such gestures as performative displays during sensitive times. This isn’t the first time, either; in 2020, several members of Congress made headlines for kneeling in Kente cloth stoles following George Floyd’s death, which drew both praise and criticism.
Variations of the sombrero meme have been circulating online for some time, especially during political tensions, and have become part of the ongoing discourse around Democratic leadership.
No immediate response was received from Vance, Schumer, or Jeffries regarding the recent events surrounding the vigil.
