Republican vice presidential nominee J.D. Vance has vowed to veto nationwide abortion bans if former President Donald Trump is re-elected.
Vance comment In an interview with Kristen Welker on Saturday’s “Meet the Press,” Welker quoted Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina as saying that if Trump is elected, he would try to pass a federal abortion ban.
“Donald Trump wants to end the culture war over this particular issue.”
“If such a bill reached President Donald Trump’s desk, would he veto it?” Welker asked.
“Let me be very clear: we are not in support of that,” Vance said.
“But will he veto it?” Welker responded.
“Well, I mean, if you as the president of the United States don’t support it, you basically have to veto it,” he replied.
At the start of the interview, Vance explained the candidate’s positions on abortion rights.
“Donald Trump wants to end the culture war over this particular issue. California wants a different abortion policy than Ohio, and Ohio has to respect California and California has to respect Ohio,” he said.
“Donald Trump’s view is that he doesn’t want the federal government to be in constant conflict on this issue, so he wants states to make decisions based on their own cultures and their own political sensibilities,” Vance continued. “The federal government should focus on lowering food prices and lowering housing prices.”
Pro-life activists expressed disappointment in Vance’s statement.
“Behaving like a Democrat on abortion will not help Trump, it will hurt him. It is politically unwise and morally wrong.” Written “There are a lot of people who want to support Trump, but the Democratic Party is[s] His attitude towards abortion hurts him.”
