Pirro Defends DC Police Amid Crime Concerns
During a Justice Department press conference on Tuesday, US lawyer Jeanine Pirro spoke out in favor of city police efforts to tackle crime, responding to questions from reporters.
One reporter inquired about recent cuts to a gun violence prevention program by the DOJ. Pirro, visibly frustrated, stated, “Yeah, stop it. We have all sorts of resources on the streets.”
Pirro Addresses Crime in the Capital
Pirro emphasized that the current crime situation in Washington, D.C., is unacceptable. She was taking a stand against what she described as “out of control” crime, particularly in light of President Trump’s announcement that federal authorities would take control of the metropolitan police and deploy 800 National Guards.
When asked whether crime rates had finally begun to decline, Pirro’s response was a mixture of skepticism and urgency: “It’s never been enough. This has changed. This has changed.”
She added, quite pointedly, “You tell these families that there’s less crime,” recalling the mother of an intern who had recently gone out for fast food near the Washington Convention Center, implying that such assurances often ring hollow.
Criticism from Democrats
In response to Trump’s crime strategy, top Democrats expressed strong disapproval, labeling it a “massive lie.” They took to social media to voice their criticism of the approach being proposed.
In another incident highlighted during the conference, Eric Tarpinian, a 21-year-old student and intern for Rep. Ron Estes, tragically lost his life after being shot in a drive-by incident. This incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgency surrounding the crime issue and the need for effective measures.
Pirro also touched on recent carjacking incidents involving teenagers and expressed her frustration at the seeming disconnect between policy and reality: “You’re down to kids who have beaten hell and back with a terrible concussion and a broken nose,” indicating that much of the dialogue surrounding these issues often falls on deaf ears.
