Jeff McNeil providing the Mets with options after another strong performance in center field

Mets Updates: McNeil’s Performance and Marte’s Return

On Monday, David Stearns mentioned that Jeff McNeil’s growing comfort in center field has somewhat eased the team’s need for additional help at that position.

The following day, McNeil took on an active role again, fielding for the Mets in center for the second consecutive game this season.

The organization feels more confident in McNeil’s abilities as a long-time infielder, though he did caution that he may not transition smoothly into a full-time, tough role.

Utilizing McNeil in center allows the Mets to create opportunities for Brett Baty at second base, Ronnie Mauricio at third, and Mark Vientos as the designated hitter.

Despite this, McNeil consistently makes solid hits and plays in center field, even if his sprint speed ranks him in the lower points behind others, according to Statcast.

“He’s not only handling everyday plays, but also managing to cut off some balls in the gaps,” noted Manager Carlos Mendoza just before their game against the Angels.

This season, McNeil maintains an OPS of .814, which is notable given that Taylor has struggled with a .572 OPS while sitting on the bench.

However, McNeil’s past injuries—especially recurring hamstring issues over his eight seasons in the MLB—prompt Mendoza to remain cautious about overextending him at center field.

“We need to be careful and look out for his health too,” Mendoza stated. “TT is still getting his chances and is a valuable player.”

In other news, the Mets have activated Starling Marte from the injured list.

Although Marte didn’t start immediately, Mendoza indicated that he could serve as a hitter or designated hitter in the near future.

Marte had been sidelined since July 6 with a bruise on his knee—a result of an unusual play he made while in the outfield.

Mendoza acknowledged that injuries might occur from such field play, yet added that Marte had been heavily relied upon before his injury.

Encouragingly, Mendoza expressed no hesitation to have Marte back on the field, feeling positive about his current condition.

Meanwhile, the Mets placed Brandon Waddell on the 15-day injured list due to a right hip injury sustained during Friday’s game against the Reds.
