Jeff McNeil Bids Farewell to Mets Fans
On Saturday, Jeff McNeil shared an emotional message directed at Mets fans. Having devoted his entire career to the Mets before recently signing with the Athletics, he took to Instagram to express gratitude toward the fans, coaching staff, and teammates from his eight-year tenure in Queens.
“New York will always be part of my story,” McNeil said, accompanying his message with a video highlighting his moments as a Met. “Since being drafted in 2013, all I’ve known is the Mets organization, and it’s been an incredible run. I truly appreciate every moment, every lesson, and every memory I’ve collected along the way.”
He emphasized his thanks to the fans, admitting they made him and his family feel at home in New York for many years. He also recognized Steve and Alex Cohen, his coaching staff, and teammates for making his journey so special.
“With gratitude, it’s time to turn the page and embrace the next chapter in green and gold,” McNeil added.
At 33, McNeil was traded to the Athletics in exchange for 17-year-old pitching prospect Yordan Rodriguez. Additionally, the Mets will be sending over $5.75 million to the Athletics to help cover the $15.75 million contract McNeil is owed for the next season.
Mets Director of Baseball Operations, David Stearns, issued a statement expressing appreciation for McNeil’s contributions, noting that he was drafted by the Mets and excelled in their system. Stearns wished McNeil and his family success moving forward, while also welcoming Rodriguez to their roster.
While changes were in the air, McNeil’s future in Queens seemed uncertain, especially after the Mets traded outfielder Brandon Nimmo and second baseman Marcus Semien. Ultimately, McNeil became a tradeable asset.
Last season, he participated in 122 games, finishing with a slash line of .243/.335/.411, which included 21 doubles and 12 home runs. While this marked an improvement from his previous season, it fell short of the batting title he secured in 2022.
Interestingly, McNeil’s exit comes shortly after reports surfaced about ongoing tensions between him and shortstop Francisco Lindor, rekindling issues from four years prior that stemmed from on-field frustrations.
