Live Finale Spoiler on “Survivor 50”
Warning: Contains spoilers.
During the live finale of “Survivor 50,” host Jeff Probst unintentionally revealed key results that spoiled an essential part of the show. The 64-year-old host announced that contestant Rizo Velovic had lost the final fire-starting challenge before it was scheduled to air.
While standing next to Berovich in a studio in Los Angeles, Probst said, “Camp life is also kindling.” He then, perhaps unwittingly, disclosed that Velovic was eliminated from the competition.
“I don’t know if there’s anything to think about there, but anyway, Lizzo, you’re the last member of our jury. Sit here,” he added, making it clear that Verovich lost the challenge.
Probst continued, “This is it. These are our people. Their game fell a little short, but this is the group going forward…” before suddenly halting.
“What the hell happened?” he questioned, realizing something was amiss. Contestants close by quickly pointed out that “the fire hasn’t happened yet.”
“Huh?” Probst replied, bewildered as the cast engaged in conversation nearby. “Keep going,” someone encouraged from off-camera.
“I don’t even know what happened,” he confessed before CBS cut to a commercial break.
Upon returning, Probst addressed the blunder. “Okay, so I love doing live TV,” he remarked, eliciting cheers from the audience.
“In case you’re confused, this is what happened. We were going to show you guys how to start a fire and then have Lizzo, the loser of the fire start, come out and talk about how he could have won if he had practiced how to start the fire,” he explained, clarifying the mix-up.
Probst added, “Instead, we’ve got a ‘Survivor’ twist. This is the final twist of the season. We’re calling it a ‘peek into the future.'” The audience would now witness Lizzo losing to Jonathan in the fire challenge.
Filmed in Fiji a few months earlier, the challenge had Jonathan Young defeating Velovic for a spot in the Final Three. Probst then introduced the footage by saying, “Watch Lizzo lose!”
Viewers did not hesitate to share their thoughts on the live blunder via social media. One remarked, “As someone who missed watching Will Smith get slapped live, this was the wildest moment I’ve ever seen on live TV. Rest in peace to the person who just lost his job.”
Another wrote, “We’ll never have a live finale again.”
“Unbelievable. But handled very well. It was interesting. We all knew who would win the attack. Everything was good,” commented a third.
Ultimately, Aubrey Bracco triumphed over Young Hunter and Joe Hunter in the final tribal council, winning “Survivor 50” and receiving the $2 million prize.
This live TV incident occurred just a week after Probst responded to viewer feedback regarding the show’s increasing intensity in recent seasons. “We experimented with all kinds of new ideas and tried to introduce things that were more unpredictable than we’d ever seen before,” he shared with Variety. “Whether you like the season or not is subjective, but it’s not like anything went wrong. I’ve made wrong choices in the past, but I don’t think I made the wrong choices in ’50.’
