The Chicago White Sox announced that Jeff Torborg, who managed the Mets for part of the 1992 and 1993 seasons, died Sunday in Westfield, New Jersey.
He was 83 years old.
Torborg had three successful years as manager of the White Sox from 1989 to 1991, winning the American League Manager of the Year Award in 1990.
The Mets then hired him, but he was fired after the team went 72-90 in 1992 and 13-25 with 38 games remaining in 1993. His successor was Dallas Green.
Torborg is a former catcher who played for the World Series champion Dodgers in 1965 and then the Angels, where he pitched Sandy Koufax's perfect game and Nolan Ryan's first no-hitter.
He began his coaching career with the then-Cleveland Indians in 1977, lasting three seasons.
He was then a member of the Yankees' coaching staff from 1979 to 1988 before joining the White Sox.
Torborg also briefly managed the Expos and Marlins.
