Jeffries alerts Republicans that Democrats will challenge the GOP spending bill

Jeffries Issues Warning on Spending Bill Negotiations

Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) cautioned GOP leaders on Tuesday that Democrats would not support a spending bill solely crafted by Republicans.

Back in March, nearly all House Democrats voted in favor of the Republicans’ 2025 spending expansion. With the deadline for the 2026 budget fast approaching on September 30, Jeffries indicated he is prepared to take a firm stance again if his party is excluded from negotiations.

“The responsibility now lies with the Trump administration and the Republicans. If they continue down a path that forces decisions on Americans without collaboration with Democrats in both chambers, our response will mirror March’s,” he stated.

“We do not endorse a partisan spending bill from Republicans who detrimentally impact Americans every day.”

Jeffries also mentioned a recent discussion with Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) regarding the spending matter.

“But, in that conversation,” he quickly noted.

In March, only one House Democrat opposed the Republican spending bill, which has since become law. Johnson successfully rallied support in the House, controlled by Republicans, and also assisted the legislation when Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and a group of moderate Democrats advanced it in the Senate.

Schumer’s backing angered many House Democrats, who urged Senate leaders to resist and utilize the filibuster to block the GOP’s proposal. This raised concerns about how Schumer would navigate the upcoming discussions, especially with the looming risk of a government shutdown if a bill isn’t on President Trump’s desk by October 1.

On Tuesday, Schumer released a letter that echoed Jeffries’ warnings, stressing Democratic opposition to the Republican-introduced spending bill.

“To circumvent a shutdown, we must work collaboratively on a bill that secures support from both Republicans and Democrats in the Senate,” Schumer emphasized. “Unfortunately, as we near the funding deadline, Republicans are once again pushing us toward a potential shutdown.”

Jeffries affirmed that Democrats in both the House and Senate are “working closely together,” mentioning he maintains “regular communication” with Schumer.

However, he hesitated to declare that House and Senate Democrats are fully aligned in their strategy against the partisan Republican bill.
