Jeffries Hesitant to Support Mamdani for NYC Mayor
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, from New York, acknowledged on Sunday that he hasn’t yet voiced his support for Zohran Mamdani, the progressive candidate for mayor of New York City. This has raised questions about the disconnect in his hometown.
In an interview with Jonathan Karl on ABC’s “This Week,” Jeffries mentioned that he spoke with Mamdani recently, commending his campaign for focusing on the high cost of living and economic issues in New York City.
When probed about why he hasn’t backed Mamdani, Jeffries remarked that they don’t have a close relationship. “Our districts don’t overlap. I’ve never had a substantial conversation with him,” he admitted.
Interestingly, this situation highlights a broader issue within the Democratic Party—how top leaders can withhold their support largely due to lack of connection.
Despite the lack of endorsement, Jeffries stated that he plans to meet Mamdani in “central Brooklyn” soon.
Mamdani’s progressive platform has caused a stir among Dems, showcasing the party’s divisions and the differing paths they might take moving forward.
However, Mamdani’s campaign is not without controversies. He’s faced criticism for various statements, including those related to housing policies that suggest shifting tax burdens from wealthier neighborhoods to areas with less affluence. Additionally, his stance on Israel, especially regarding calls for boycotts and sanctions, has raised eyebrows. He even stated that, if elected, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu would be arrested if he visited the city.
Nonetheless, Mamdani recently topped the Democratic primary, outperforming notable competitors like former governor Andrew Cuomo. In the upcoming general election, he will face off against Republican Curtis Sliwa and current mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent.
