Jeffries Breaks Down During Discussion on Obamacare Subsidies

Heated Exchange Between Lawmakers Over ACA Subsidies

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries appeared visibly upset when questioned about his refusal to extend the Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies for another year.

A video shared by Fox News correspondent Liz Elkind shows Jeffries and Rep. Mike Lawler engaging in a tense disagreement regarding Jeffries’ rejection of a bill aimed at extending these subsidies.

“We have a one-year extension available, so why not sign up now?” Lawler pressed Jeffries.

“Let me ask you, did you get permission from your boss?” Jeffries retorted.

Lawler continued, “Why not just sign it now? We could easily extend the ACA right now.” He then mentioned that Jeffries was referring to President Donald Trump as his boss. “He’s not my boss,” Jeffries shot back.

Lawler challenged Jeffries, asking, “Why did you vote to shut down the government? You’ve spent years saying we need to keep the government open.”

“You’re making this about your own reputation,” Jeffries said, implying that Lawler was trying to cover up his embarrassment over the issue.

Lawler further defended the bill, calling it a “clean one-year extension,” while Jeffries questioned Lawler’s support of Trump’s previously proposed legislation.

“I voted for the tax cut bill that provided Americans with the largest tax cut in history. The average New Yorker sees a $4,000 tax cut,” Lawler stated.

As Lawler continued speaking, Jeffries interrupted him, insisting that he wasn’t going to converse further because he was uninterested in what Lawler had to say.

“So why don’t you just shut up?” Jeffries was heard saying.

The back-and-forth continued with Jeffries questioning Lawler’s presence. Lawler replied, “We can pass the ACA extension.”

“I voted for a clean continuing resolution to keep the government funded. You chose to shut it down,” Lawler asserted.

“You’re embarrassing yourself now,” Jeffries countered.

“With all due respect, Leader, you are the one who voted to shut down the government,” Lawler snapped back.

Following the exchange, Lawler remarked that Jeffries lost his temper when confronted about the government shutdown and his refusal to sign the ACA subsidy extension.

The conflict originated after Jeffries vetoed a bill meant to prolong ACA subsidies, which are set to expire on December 31, 2025, extending through the end of 2026.

Breitbart News detailed how Democrats were perceived to be contributing to the government shutdown as the deadline for these subsidies approached.

The Biden administration initially enhanced these subsidies through the American Rescue Plan, a $1.9 trillion stimulus package. Democrats continued this support under the Inflation Control Act.

While Democrats argue that losing these enhanced subsidies would significantly impact Americans’ access to healthcare, critics like Michael Cannon from the Cato Institute have characterized them as “Obamacare subsidies for the wealthy.”
